Academic recognition
If you are a student at a Norwegian college
or university, the institution is responsible for evaluating your
educational background.
If you are not a student, but have a degree or have studied
for a degree abroad,
an application for general recognition should be sent to NOKUT,
The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education. To apply
for recognition, you can start by downloading the application form
(in Norwegian or English) from NOKUT's
homepage. Once you're there, click on the English flag and proceed
by way of the headlines on the left hand side of the page. Here
you will also find useful information about the recognition process.
NOKUT
assesses the level and extent of your education in relation to the
Norwegian equivalent. The assessment is made based on the minimum
requirements for admission to higher education. Education exceeding
the minimum requirement will be recognised, provided that it is
considered to be higher education in the home country. One year
of full-time study in the home country is equal to one year of full-time
study in Norway. Study periods are measured in 'studiepoeng' (credit
points), where 60 studiepoeng equals one year of full-time study.
A recognition document from NOKUT will give a brief description
of your education, and outline how it is recognised in number of
years and studiepoeng (credit points) in relation to a Norwegian
first (and sometimes also second) degree. This will normally be
sufficient information for potential employers if you are looking
for a job. The document is issued in Norwegian only.
The recognition document from NOKUT is based on a decision made
pursuant to section 48, subsection 1, of the Act relating to universities
and university colleges of 12 May 1995. The decision concerning
general recognition can be appealed according to the Public Administration
Act.
Should you need an evaluation in relation to specific subjects
and degrees, you must contact an educational institution that provides
the kind of education you want recognised. Most of them are listed
here.
The course of study will be evaluated in relation to specific subjects
and degrees in the Norwegian system of education. Note that such
evaluations require substantial documentation, such as reading lists
and course descriptions in addition to Diplomas and transcript of
records.
A number of professions require authorisation for practising
(for instance nursing, teaching, law). Read more about them here.
