for some adult immigrants (16 years or older), others will have
to pay.

Curriculum
Courses are based on the curriculum Læreplan
i norsk og samfunnskunnskap for voksne innvandrere (2005).
Tracks and programmes
Language training courses are organised in different ways: 
Persons with little or no formal education will usually follow
track 1. Courses are either ordinary classroom instruction or work-related
courses. Those who have completed secondary
or tertiary education in their home countries will usually follow
track 2 or 3.
There are also special classes for persons who cannot read or write
the Latin alphabet.
"On-the-job-Norwegian" are courses that combines language
training with a job. They offer
- part-time work and language training
- language classes
- information on rules governing Norwegian working life
- other useful things to know about the job market

New regulations from 1 September 2005: The Introductory Act
All refugees and some immigrants who get their first residence
permit from September 1. 2005 will be obliged to complete 250 hours
of language training and 50 hours Norwegian Society to be able to
apply for a permanent settlement in Norway.
The classes in Norwegian life and society are given in a language
that the participant can understand.
Some have a right to free tuition, some have to pay.
If you can document certain tests or exams, you can apply for an
exemption from the duty
Persons with a EU/EEA permit are exempted from these rules.
Language training may be continued up to 3000 hours if necessary.
Those who have both a right and a duty must complete 300 hours
in three years in order to get the hours free, and the language training
up to 300o lessons must be completed within five years in total.

Course providers in Oslo
Oslo Adult Education
From August 2005, your address will to some extent decide where
you attend Norwegian classes. An overview of courses (only in Norwegian)
starting in August can be found on the website for Oslo Adult
Education - www.oslovo.no.
For those who will attend classes on track 1 and 2 (see above),
courses are offered in the region/district you live in. Courses
on track 3 for all Oslo will only be provided at Rosenhof branch
of Oslo Adult Education.
Adult education courses and Norwegian language training are offered
in three regions:
- Region North comprises the urban districts (bydeler) Bjerke,
Alna, Stovner and Grorud. The regional branch is Oslo Adult Education
Smedstua,
with a sub-division in Romsås.
- Region South is made up of Østensjø, Nordstrand
and Søndre Nordstrand urban districts (bydeler), Ther regional
centre is Oslo Adult Education Skullerud,
with a sub-division in Holmlia.
- Region West/Central comprises the urban districts (bydeler)
Gamle Oslo, Grünerløkka, Sagene, St.Hanshaugen, Frogner,
Ullern, Vestre Aker og Nordre Aker. The regional branch is Oslo
Adult Education Rosenhof,
with Avdeling Sentrum.
AOF Oslo
AOF Oslo has courses with (and without!) child-care service city-wide.

for youth
If you are between 16 and 19 years of age, you have special educational

Language training classes for parents
with small children
If you have small children and need somebody to look after them
while you attend classes, there are courses with child-minding services
in a number of urban districts. Many of the courses are for women
only, and you may apply even if you do not need child-care. You
