If you are in
need of medical assistance or have questions about diseases or other
health-related problems, there are a number of offices in Oslo that
can be of help. Below are a list of who to contact. In addition,
there are many private practitioners. A list of these can be found
in the Yellow Pages in the telephone directory or on the Internet.

The emergency ward
If you fall sick and need immediate help, contact Legevakten
- the emergency ward. Call the emergency ward closest to your home.
Below are the addresses:

The emergency wards are open from 1600 hrs to 2230 hrs on weekdays.
Weekends and holidays opening hours are from 0800 hrs to 2230 hrs.
It is not necessary to call in advance. If you do need to call,
the number is 22 93 22 93.
The central emergency ward in Storgata 40 is open 24 hours,
and is also reached on telephone no.
22 93 22 93. If the situation is life-threatening, call 113.

The Section for Migration
Health
offers a first consultation and health examination free of charge
for refugees, asylum seekers and family members. You can make an
appointment by calling telephone number 22 11 75 98. The centre
will arrange for and book an interpreter. The offer is open during
the first year of residence in Oslo. The Section for Migration Health
is located in Ullevaal University Hospital, building K.

The TB Diagnosis station
is located at Ullevaal University Hospital. If you move to Norway
from a country where this is needed, a tuberculin test is mandatory
within the first 12 months of your stay. A TBC card (tuberculin
control card) will be issued after the test. Telephone number: 22

The General Practitioner (GP) Scheme
All citizens of Oslo are entitled to a regular general practitioner,
or "family doctor". Your regular GP should give you priority
when you need an appointment. An appointment with a regular GP is
less expensive than with other practitioners. The Regular GP scheme
is voluntary. If you have chosen a doctor whose services you are
not happy with, you are free to change.

Are you pregnant?
Do you have small children?
Contact a public health centre ("helsestasjon") in your
urban district. Here you can have
- pregnancy and infant check-ups
- vaccinations for your pre-school children
- advise and counselling about health care and diseases
Health centres for youth
can be found in a number of Oslo's urban districts. If you want
to talk about contraceptives, bad skin, depressions, drugs or a
broken heart, you are welcome. It is free of charge, and you do
not have to make an appointment in advance. Addresses and opening

Sexually transmitted diseases
If you want to know more about contraceptives, safe sex and sexually
transmitted diseases, or if you think you have a sexually transmitted

The OK project against female circumcision
is the implementation of the Government's Action Plan against genital
mutilation.
The principal aim of the OK Project is to prevent circumcision of
girls and women and to ensure that the ones who have undergone circumcision
are offered adequate care.

The Norwegian Centre for Studies
on Violence and Traumatic Stress (NKVTS)
is committed to research, teaching and supervision on the psychosocial
aspects of the refugee situation. Section for Refugee health and
forced migration, previously the Psychosocial Centre for Refugees,
is conducting research and program development and evaluations that
build knowledge concerning the prevalence, prevention, assessment,
and treatment of violence and traumatic stress.

NAKMI - Norwegian Centre for Minority Health
Research
The aim of NAKMI is to serve as a meeting point for minority health
issues in Norway. Main target groups are health personnel, scientists
and other groups engaged in health care for minorities. The objective
of establishing a national unit is to ultimately offer equal medical
treatment to all citizens of Norway. NAKMIs focus will be
on issues of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural nature. Various
activities are aimed at contributing to increased knowledge of minority
health and over time to ensure minorities and their kin a culture-sensitive
and appropriate treatment.

IHSG - Network International Health and Social
